Nilgai

The nilgai or blue bull is the largest Asian antelope and one of the most commonly seen species of wild animals in india. Nilgai is diurnal creature found onhabitting indian grasslands. Their range covers national parks plains and low hills with shrubs.

Woodpecker

Woodpecker's don't have any vocal cards that mean they cant make sound. Drumming trees with their beaks play an important part of their communication with each other!

Drumming- also called tapping and rapping is a woodpecker's act of rapidly pecking on a resonant object to create a pattern of sound.

Hornbill

Hornbill are called 'Farmers of the forest' as they dependent on tropical forest habitats that contain large, tall trees and disperse the seeds of many trees and keep the forest alive.

Most Hornbill species in india are listed as vulnerable or near threatened by the international union for conservation of nature. The major threats to these birds are hunting and loss of habitat.

Lion Tailed Macaque

It is a medium to sized macaque of southern india Lion-tailed macaques are found in dense forests along the western Ghats. The call of this monkey is like a human and sounds like 'Coyeh' or a coo.

They don't often come to the ground they are excellent swimmers and are quadrupedal i.e. they walk on all four limbs. It is a good climber and spend most of its life in the upper branches.

Indian Bull Frog

Hoplobatrachus tigerinus. It is also known as Indus Valley Bull frog.It is a large species of frog found in India. They inhabit holes and bushes near permanent water sources.the frog does not stay in water for a long time;it spends most of its time and feeding in surrounding vegetation.

They feed on various type of insects,invertebrates,mice,shrews, young frogs,earthworms,roundworm,juvenile snakes,and small birds.

Snow Leopard

Snow leopards can't roar. Snow leopards are found at atitudes between 3000 and 5,200 meters (9,800 and 17,000 feet) in the high, rugged mountains of Central Asia including the himalayan mountains. Snow leopards can kill prey weighing as three times their own body weight. Cubs are born blind and don't gain their sight until they're nine days old. Snow Leopards are an endangered species.

Barn Owl

(Tyto alba) Barn Owls can see an object at 2 meters with an illumination of 0.00000073 foot candlles. This is equivalent to a person seeing an object by the light of a match a mile way.They have also super sensitive heaieing.They usually hunt at night.

Honey Badger

Honey badgers have been listed in the Guinness Book of World Record as "the most fearless animal on the planet"!! Their thick skin helps protect them from the deadliest of all snakebites. they are very aggeressive manmmals and known to fight off lions and leopards on a few occasions.Its diet consists of beetles,scorpions,tortoises,lizards,snakes,rodents as well as monogoose.They also like to eat roots, berries and bulbs.

Ants

Ants are capable of carrying objects 50 times their own body wight with their mandibles.

Crow

Crows can recognize human faces and will even hold grudges against people they dont't like.

Racket-Tailed Drongo

Racket-Tailed Drongo have two wirelike 'racket' tipped feathers that extend beyond the tail. They are placed along with other drongos in the family Dicruridae.

Racket-Tailed Drongo is known to mimic about 22 types of birds and can scare other birds by mimicking the calls of predator birds.

The Racket-Tailed Drongo has a reputation of being aggressive and fearless. It will attack much larger birds, including raptors, especially when they are brooding chicks.

Drangos are indulge in kleptoparasitism, snatching food from smaller birds.

Butterflies

Most butterflies lack the ability to bite or chew, so they taste by using feet.

When a butterfly lands on a plant, they use sensors on their feet to determine whether or not what they're standing on is edible.

Earthworm

Earthworms are considered best friends of farmers, acting as engineers in soils. They are helpful in the decomposition of waste, producing biofertilizers.

Scientist find that earthworm guts can digest cellulose, opening new avenues for the recycling of orgamic waste.

They have found that the gut of earthworms provides an ideal environment for nurturing a variety of cellulose-degrading bacteria becouse of which they able to convert organic waste from plant sources into fertilizer or compost.

Rusty Spotted Cat

Rusty Spotted Cat in one of the smallest cat species in the world that this cat has been called the hummingbird of the cat family due to its small size agility and activeness.

The Rusty-spotted cat is known to be rare, but there is little else knowns about the status of this small cat. Deforastration and the spread of agriculture pose a serious threat for much of the wildlife in india.

Wolfspider

Racket-Tailed Drongo have two wirelike 'racket' tipped feathers that extend beyond the tail. They are placed along with other drongos in the family Dicruridae.

They are free living ground dwelling hunters. Some lives in burrows or constuct sheet webs with funnel.

Wolf spider will bite when threatened but there venom is not very harmful to humans. Human victims may exhibit some redness or swelling but no serious medical problems have ever been reported.

Rabbits

Rabbits have 360 degree panoramic vision, allowing them to detect predators from all direction. It is hard to sneak up on a rabbit: There vision covers nearly 360 degree, which allows them to see what's coming from behind them, above them, and from the sides without turning theit heads.

Rabbits are remarkably hygienic. Like cats, they keep themselves clei throughout the day by licking their fur and paws. - They can't vomit. - Their teeth never stop growing.

Vision of Eagle

The eagle eye is among the strongest in the animal kingdom, with an eyesight estimated at 4 to 8 times stronger than that of the Avery human. An eagle is said to be able to spot a rabbit 3.2 km away. As the eagle descends fron the sky to attack it's prey, the muscles in the eyes continuously adjust the curvature of the eyeballs to maintain sharp focus and accuy preception throughout the approach and attack.

Bats

Bat can search their prey even in extreme darkness.

Actually bat emits high pity inaudible sound to detect the prey.

Gaur

Do you know that many people refer to Indian Gaur as the bison. This is a misnomer. Bisons are commonly found in America and are smaller than indian Gaur's.

The gaur (Bos gaurus), also called Indian bison, is the largest extant bovine, native to Indian subcontinent and southeast Asia. It hs been listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red list, since 986.

Gaur is the largest representative of the wild carte, Males weight between 600 and 1000 Kgs. They can reach 8 to 11 feet in length and from 5 to 7 feet at the height at shoulder. Females reach only 1/4 of the males size.

The grurs have a distinctive white part continuing below their knees, which looks like socks worn by them.

Praying Mantises

Praying mantises have bulging eyes and heads that can swivel 180 degrees. The praying mantis cleans its forelegs after eating.

Chameleon tongue

Chameleon tongues are extremely fast and that is twice as long its body.

Pangolin

Pangolins unusually give birth to a single baby. The new borns scales are soft but begin to harden in few days. It is born with its eyes open, but is unable to walk for a few weeks. It clings to the base of the mother's tail.

Hummingbird

Hummingbird is the only bird that can fly backwards!! The hummit has a unit muscle and wing structure that gives them a great level of flight control.

It can hover fly right to left, left to right, diagonal and forword. The hummingbird has the ability to rotate it's wings in circles making a figure eight.

Rhinoceros

A Rhinoceros's horn is distinctive, and the name "rhinoceros" actually comes from the Greek words for "nose" and "horn". Horns are made up of bone. They're hard on the outside thanks to a thin layer of keratin the stuff that makes up our fingernails and hairs. Unlike the horns of most animals which are mostly bone within a thin envelope of keratin, a rhino's horn is made of 100% keratin. The rhino's horn is not bone and is not attached to its skull ; itbis also not hollow like elepy tusks. Theyy really thick bundles of protein fibres.

Common Hawk Cuckoo

The common hawk cuckoo, popularly knows as the brainfever bird.

It bears a close resemblance to the shikra, a sparrow hawk, even in its style of flying and landing on a perch.

During their breeding season in summer males produce loud, repetitaive three note calls that are well-rendered as brain-fever. The second note longer and heigher pitched.

Rules & Regulation

Please follow the rules and regulation as per the wildlife protection act 1972 to avoid impose punishment for violating the same. The schedules give absolute protection to certain species and these cannot be infringed on any account.Offences related to trade and commerce in trophies, animals articles etc. Derived from certain animals attracts a term of imprisonment up to three years and/or a fine up to Rs. 25,000/-.

Melghat Tiger Reserve offers various activities like day safari, Full day Safari, Night Machaan Stay, Kayaking, Elephant ride, Trekking, Adventure activities like zorbi ball, Burma bridge, River crossing, Parallel bridge and many more. These various activities are available at tourist destination like Aamzari, Semadoh, Kolkas, Harisal, Shahanur. The tribal dance show can be arranged on request. Home stay facility is also provided to experience the culture & day to day life style of tribal.
